Victory Grill

Victory Grill

Across the street from Hotel Eleven is a music venue that’s been around since the end of World War II. The Historic Victory Grill opened in 1945 as a gathering place for African-American soldiers returning home from the war. Over the years it played host to music legends such as BB King, Etta James, Billie Holliday and James Brown. Still a live music venue (although no longer serving food), check out their Facebook page for performances when you are in town.

The beautiful grounds are located just a few blocks east of the hotel, and are the final resting place of Texas governors, legislators, judges and other legendary Texans including Stephen F. Austin.

Franklin’s isn’t the only great barbeque joint located in our little neighborhood. Just a few blocks in the other direction is Micklethwait Craft Meats. Although their name may be a mouthful, you’ll be glad when you get a mouthful of their simply divine smoked meats, including brisket, lamb sausage, beef and pork ribs, chicken and pulled pork. Everything here is homemade, including the sauce, all sides, bread and desserts (doesn’t a homemade moon pie sound incredible?).

Conveniently located right next door to Hotel Eleven, J&J Spirits has been an East side institution since 1968. Formerly owned and operated by twin brothers Harold and Howard Joseph (whose picture still graces the wall), new owners recently have taken over the business, and continue to dole out the charm of the neighborhood’s locally-owned liquor store. J&J carries premium spirits, local beer, wine, cigars and specialty grocery and bar ware.
